Kanal Ob Soci is a charming market town nestled in the stunnningly beautiful Socca valley. This central location is perfect for easy exploration of  the whole western side of Slovenia.  Bled, Julian Alps, Piran and the sea,  Llubijana and Postojna and so many more delights are all at your finger tips.

Kanal is an Italian style town with a population of 2000 which straddles the banks of the River Soca. The two sides of the town are connected by the famous double arched bridge first built in 1580.  Repeatedly destroyed by War the bridge was last rebuilt in 1920. The region has a tradition of bridge diving and during July, Kanal hosts the World Diving cup when a diving platform is raised 6 meters above the 17 meter high bridge. During the summer months a beach culture arises on the banks of the river. 

In the center of the town is St Mary's Church which was founded in 1431 and completed during the 17th and 18th Centuries. The Kontrada square behind the Tourist Information is bordered by the old town wall which once enclosed and protected Kanal. 

There are various sculptures in and around the square with the most famous being "Neptune's Well" outside the Fontana bar and pizzeria which was sculpted in 1815. Now a fountain, this originally decorated the towns water supply. Kanal is surrounded by wooded hills which can be explored via a network of footpaths and forest tracks..

• Hotel Bar and restaurant- Basic but good food and excellent value, a la carte and tourist set menu. Local wine supplier.

                                                       Tues-Sun 7-22.00; Kitchen 10-14.00 & 18-20.00 although opening times are variable; Closed Monday.

• Fontana Bar and Pizzeria- 7-23.00 ; Pizzas from 14.00 every day except Weds and Thurs. Eat in or take away.

• Okrepčevalnica Pirih (Campsite restaurant on bank of Socca) - Great bar with football table and good quality bar meals, mixed grill, burgers , calamari etc.  Eat in or take away.   Variable opening times during winter but generally 14 - 24.00 during the summer
  

• Bar Libero- 7.30-22.00. Closed Sunday

• Rafaelo Bar and Sweet Shop - with homemade ice-cream and cakes. Also fresh bread on a sunday when the supermarkets are closed. 8-22.00. Closed Weds.

TIC - Tourist information- 8-12.00 & 15-17.00 Internet access available.
